Wentao Zhai
J.D. Candidate, Harvard Law School ’21

I graduated from Middlebury College in 2017 with high honors in Classics, and received the Ertegun Scholarship in Humanities at Oxford for a Masters Degree in Greek and Latin languages and literature. Although I subsequently enrolled in law school and am no longer pursuing a career in academia, classical literature remains a passion of mine, and I am deeply interested in the prospect of introducing the study of ancient Mediterranean world to students in China. My translation of Virgil emanated from my coursework in college, when I took more advanced courses in Latin poetry. I had attempted literary translation sporadically in the past, mostly between Chinese and English, but translating from Latin was more challenging and stimulating.
