I graduated from Columbia University and now teach in classics department at DePauw University. I’ve been teaching Roman history, Latin, Greek. Currently, I’ve been working on reception of Roman literature in China. For me western classics are interesting because it provides a profound understanding of western culture in general. Also, thinkers and writers who were active in first half of 20th century, a transitional period in Chinese history, were reading about western history and using western examples to support their arguments. Comparing their arguments and what happened in reality is tremendously interesting. Revolutionary Chinese thinkers made superficial interpretations. My question is that now we’ve demolished their foundation, are things that changed the mindset of the Chinese people still good? Since Many Chinese universities mainly use Latin and Greek textbooks written in English, German or French, comprehensive textbooks would be very helpful. I’d love to have audio materials, recitations of poetry, pronunciations of words, etc. Also, I would like to have translations of English or Chinese for at least some of the most representative passages and glossaries for representative readings.
